Chapter 613
Frowning, Matthew put down his cutlery. "Did Jennifer come here to cause trouble, Mom?"noveldrama
Lillian sighed. "I know she has some bad qualities, like being obsessed with money and really harsh. When she asked if she could borrow money, I really didn't want to lend it to her. But then she brought up about being Lorraine's grandmother, I ended up lending her some money."
Matthew was frustrated, but he had to keep his cool around Lillian. He replied in resignation, "Look at how she treats Lorraine, Mom. For Lorraine's sake, you can't lend her money. I don't want us to be involved with them anymore. If she shows up again, don't even bother with her."
Lillian nodded. "I regretted it the moment I lent her money, so I'm never doing that again. Are you and Rachel having issues in your relationship, Matthew? You haven't talked about her lately, and she hasn't come by to see Lorraine in quite a while."
Next to them, Lorraine chimed in. "I haven't seen Rachel in a long time, Dad. I really miss her. Can you pick me up from school with her tomorrow?"
Matthew furrowed his brows. "I'll try talking to her. Hopefully, she isn't busy."
The next day, Matthew carried Lorraine as he walked toward the school gate.
A short distance away, Gavin also made his way to the school gate with Braylen in his arms. But he looked a bit rough today, with a few fresh scratches on his face. They looked pretty recent.
Upon spotting Gavin, Matthew knitted his brows together.
Lorraine noticed Gavin and leaned closer to Matthew's ear, whispering, "No more fighting with Mr. Hostetler, okay? You need to listen to me."
Matthew held Lorraine close to him. He realized that his three years in prison had left her with some emotional scars.
"I'll do what you say. I promise I won't lay a hand on anyone." With that, Matthew hurried over to the kindergarten's gate.
He hoped Gavin wouldn't cause any trouble. Even if Gavin did, he figured he'd just put up with it. In any case, he didn't want Lorraine to worry about it.
Thank goodness Gavin didn't make a fuss. As Matthew came to the gate, he crouched to put Lorraine on her feet.
Watching Lorraine head inside the kindergarten, Matthew felt a weight lift off his chest. Gavin wasn't looking for trouble, and Matthew didn't want to stir anything up either.
The latter quickly turned to leave. But after a few steps, he suddenly heard a voice behind him. "Wait a minute, Matthew."
Matthew turned around with a cold expression. "Listen up. You started it yesterday. I'm not looking for a fight right now, so you'd better not provoke me."
Gavin pulled out a pack of cigarettes and tapped on the bottom of it, making one pop out. He passed the cigarette to Matthew.
"I'm sorry about yesterday, Matthew. I got a bit carried away, so I just wanted to apologize."
Matthew was taken aback. "I don't smoke. Since you said so, I won't bring up what happened yesterday. Let's just move on."
After saying that, Matthew was about to leave, but Gavin quickly stopped him. "Hold on a minute, Matthew. I still need to ask you something.
"When I got home yesterday, I talked to my wife about Braylen. She got all worked up and ended up scratching my face.
"Are you serious about me having Cryonephritis? I need to get to the bottom of this, so please be honest with me."
Matthew wasn't interested in dealing with Gavin, but then he thought of Lorraine and had a change of heart.
"Get Braylen to apologize to my daughter, and I'll be happy to help you."
Gavin nodded. "Alright. I'll have Braylen apologize to Lorraine. I just want to know. Are you sure that having Cryonephritis means I'm infertile?"
Matthew started feeling sorry for Gavin and sighed. "I'm certain."
Gavin crossed his arms. "But my wife insists that I'm the only one she's ever slept with in her life. She said I'd tarnished her name."
Matthew wanted to suggest doing a DNA test to clear things up, but he thought of a simple solution. "With this condition, your kidneys function better in the summer and take a hit in the winter. During the winter, when you struggle to last long, how did your wife feel about it?"
Gavin thought for a moment before replying, "In the first winter, I just couldn't satisfy my wife. She would get me avocado, oysters, and dark chocolate, but they were ineffective.
"Eventually, she became more and more frustrated with me, and her attitude kept getting worse.
"During the second winter, I was feeling helpless at first, and she was really sulking. Later, she started getting into card games and came home late every day. But every time she came back, she was beaming and glowing."
At this point, Gavin suddenly stopped talking.
What do you think?
