Chapter 1089
No one could stay calm standing in front of this much wealth.
Grant's eyes were wide, jaw slack with disbelief. This was the kind of treasure people would kill for a fortune big enough to buy the world.
But Chloe's face was unreadable. She wasn't thinking about gold or jewels. All she could focus on was finding a way out, a way to save everyone. Should she risk everything and strike at Killian while he was caught up in his own victory? Even if she did, they were trapped, buried hundreds of meters underground. Escape seemed impossible.
Her mind spun, desperate for a solution. That's when she noticed something— and suddenly screamed.noveldrama
Grant was nearby. The moment he heard her, he ran to her side. "What's wrong?"
Chloe just stared, panic frozen on her face. Grant followed her gaze-then recoiled, heart hammering in his chest. But instinct took over, and he moved to shield Chloe.
Laid out before them were dozens of corpses-or rather, mummified remains. Adults and children, far too many to count, all surrounded by piles of gold and silver. They had died right here, in the middle of all this unimaginable wealth. Some even had daggers still stuck in their bodies. Yet there were no signs of a fight. The bodies were arranged neatly, each draped in jewels and finery, the whole scene both bizarre and horrifying.
Killian arrived, his eyes sweeping over the corpses. He didn't look the least bit disturbed. "Why are you panicking? They're just bodies."
Grant spoke, voice tight. "Father, no one's ever opened this vault before. How could there be so many corpses here?"
If looters had come, why was all the treasure still here?
Killian shrugged. "Probably a gang of grave robbers. They heard the legends,
tried their luck. Made it in, couldn't get out. Simple as that."
He didn't seem to care at all. Maybe that wasn't surprising-he'd seen more than his share of death.
But Chloe was counting, lips moving silently.
Thirty-seven. Thirty-seven bodies.
Suddenly, everything clicked into place. Chloe's heart thudded as the truth hit her. "This is it. This is the real story. Jeffery and my mentor never killed the Grevenberg family. Because the family wasn't dead yet."
Grant stared at her, stunned. "What are you talking about?"
"Isn't it obvious?" Chloe's voice shook. "These thirty-seven mummies—they're the Grevenberg family."
Killian's face changed, his easy confidence vanishing, replaced by something cold and furious. "No. That's impossible."
"If these were grave robbers like you said, why are there so many children?" Chloe shot back.
Killian started trembling, stumbling
a. "No. Say another w
my family, and I'll sure regret it."
But Chloe didn't back down. "Have you ever thought about it? Every report, every memory-there were thirty-eight members of the
Grevenberg family, and when tel
fire
happened, there were thirty-eight bodies. But you survived, didn't you? So shouldn't there have been
thirty-seven?”
Killian had wondered about it before. But he'd been a child then. One extra body
in a fire-who would think twice?
What do you think?
