Chapter 85 The Box That Was Knocked
Michael was nervous. 'Man, talk about bad luck.'
If Michael could let loose, he'd be cussing up a storm right now.
He hadn't done a thing, yet out of everyone in the village, the ghost had to pick him.
And it didn't just pick him; it showed up at the worst possible time.
Ever since he got the demon's eye, he'd been paralyzed for an hour or two almost every night. The more he used it, the longer the paralysis lasted.
Sure, it was a pain, but he could deal with it. Most folks sleep for eight hours anyway.
But what Michael couldn't deal with was a ghost showing up when he couldn't move a muscle.
In the pitch-black room, he couldn't see much, but the sound of the door creaking open was crystal clear.
He could almost make out a tall, shadowy figure standing at his door, not moving an inch.
From the blurry outline, it was obvious this wasn't Emilio. It was someone or something completely unfamiliar.
The figure didn't look like anyone from the village. It was like it had just popped out of thin air.
After the door opened, the tall, shadowy figure didn't just hang around outside. It walked in with these heavy, thudding steps.
Those footsteps didn't sound like they belonged to a living person. More like a stiff, cold corpse.
Michael stared hard in the direction of the footsteps, sweat pouring down his face.
He wanted to get up, but the demon's eye still had him locked down.
'Stay cool, even if it's a ghost, it might not hurt me. If I haven't triggered its kill switch, it might just pass by,' he thought.
Since he couldn't move, he forced himself to stay calm.
He'd run into high-level ghosts before, and with a bit of luck, he might just make it out alive.
Suddenly, the footsteps stopped. Right by his bedside, less than six feet away.
Michael could feel a cold breath creeping over him, and a damp, rotten smell filled the air with each breath.
No doubt about it, this was definitely a ghost.
'Why did it stop? Is it waiting for the right moment, or have I not triggered its kill switch?' Michael's whole body was trembling. If he hadn't dealt with Vengeful Ghosts before, he'd probably have passed out from fear.
He was less than six feet away from a terrifying ghost, and the worst part was he couldn't move at all. Even a low-level ghost could easily take him out.
In the dark room, it was like a standoff between the unknown ghost and paralyzed Michael.
The place was eerily quiet.
All you could hear was Michael's slightly heavy breathing. Other than that, nothing.
But that didn't mean there was no danger. As long as the ghost was still in the room, Michael's life was on the line.
Even being a Ghost Handler didn't guarantee his safety.
'Why is it here? To kill me? No, if it wanted to kill me, I'd be dead already. I must not be its main target. Is it here to watch me?' Michael blinked, sweat stinging his eyes. 'Maybe, but a real ghost wouldn't waste time watching someone unless it's a Ghost Slave.'
'A ghost that can control a Ghost Slave must have a Ghost Realm, usually rated A-level, like the knocking ghost.'
'If it's a ghost of that level, then the Stormcrest Village incident is a lost cause. It's way out of my league,' Michael thought.
But just as he was lost in thought, the footsteps started up again.
It didn't head towards his bedside but circled around the foot of the bed and opened a wardrobe.
Michael was on edge. The wardrobe was empty, just filled with stuff he'd packed for his trip to Stormcrest Village.
Sure, the items were pricey, but they were useless to a ghost.
'Could it be a Ghost Handler from the Enigma Elite Club here to steal my stuff?' Michael wondered.

If that was the case, it wouldn't be the worst thing. At least he'd be dealing with a Ghost Handler, not an actual ghost.
The sound of something hitting metal echoed sharply in the room.
One strike after another, heavy and rhythmic.
Michael remembered the only thing in his backpack that could make that noise was the golden box holding the headless ghost shadow.
'Damn it, this ghost is trying to break the golden box containing the headless ghost shadow.' He was shocked, and a wave of fear washed over him.
This ghost wanted to release the headless ghost shadow?
'No! If it gets out, it will be the end.' With that thought, Michael began to struggle desperately, trying to regain control of his body.
The headless ghost shadow was something he had personally imprisoned.
He knew exactly what this ghost could do. Once released, it would immediately take over his body.
If the headless ghost shadow got his demon's eye, it would have a Ghost Realm, and an unrestricted one at that.
Its terror level would skyrocket, becoming as terrifying as the knocking ghost.
Then no one in Stormcrest Village would survive, and those few from the Enigma Elite Club would all become the headless ghost shadow's prey.
If the headless ghost shadow eventually formed a body made of Vengeful Ghosts...
Michael didn't know how the world would deal with such a ghost.
'I must find a way to stop it,' he thought.
He gritted his teeth, trying to fight against the demon's eye in his body, to make his body move.
As long as he could move, he could immediately grab the golden box and use the Ghost Realm to get far away from this ghost.
As long as the headless ghost shadow wasn't released, there was still a chance to turn things around.
However, the continuous knocking sound persisted.
Michael felt this sound was even more terrifying than the knocking ghost's. He didn't know how many more strikes the box could withstand.
Maybe it would take dozens of strikes to completely open the golden box or maybe just one more.
As long as the box had a small crack, the headless ghost shadow would escape, and then Michael's worst fears would come true.
He was still struggling on the bed, trying to get up.
But reality didn't give him that chance. No matter how much Michael struggled, he couldn't regain control of his body.
Human will and spirit seemed incredibly fragile in the face of a ghost.
Before the time was up, the demon's eye wouldn't return control of his body to Michael.noveldrama
However, there wasn't just three ghosts in the room; another one was also present.
In the opened wardrobe, a piece of human skin paper moved without wind, slowly floating out, whether by coincidence or intention.
In the darkness, the human skin paper accurately covered the deformed golden box being struck.
The knocking suddenly stopped, and everything around fell into a stifling silence once again.
'It stopped? Why?' he thought.
Michael didn't know the real situation; he only knew the knocking had ceased.
'Could it be that the box has already opened?' Michael wondered.
The cessation of the sound didn't bring him any relief, only more fear.
If the box had really been opened, it would mean that a headless ghost shadow was standing right by his bed.
