Chapter 41
"Didn't he just have surgery two days ago? I'm on my way!"noveldrama
My chest tightened. I only had time to tell Kourtney to head home before I rushed off with Nora.
Watching me leave, Kourtney felt a pang of concern.
Just then, the door opened and Casey walked in. Her eyes met Kourtney's, and her expression immediately darkened.
"What are you doing here?"
Kourtney took a step back when she saw Casey. "You... Dr. Ranford went to check on a patient. He's not here."
"Of course, I know he's not here."
Casey looked her up and down with disdain. "Fresh out of college, huh? You look like you'd blow away in a breeze. What, did you pretend to trip and fall into his arms to seduce him?"
Kourtney's face went pale. "I don't know what you're talking about. Dr. Ranford is a good man. He doesn't like you. Please stop bothering him."
The next moment, Casey slapped her across the face.
Kourtney clutched her cheek, her eyes welling up with tears.
"Who do you think you are? What right do you have to speak about us?" She stepped toward the desk, and Kourtney instinctively blocked her. "No, this is Dr. Ranford's office. What are you trying to do?"
"We were together for over five years and almost got married. He spent millions of dollars on gifts for me every year. Do you think he can just walk away from this relationship like it's nothing? You're just a bumpkin from the countryside, you think you're good enough to compete with me?"
Casey grabbed Kourtney by the chin and looked at her with contempt. "Not only am I not leaving, but I'm going to wait right here until he gets back. Now, get out!"
Kourtney clenched her fists. "Dr. Ranford told me himself that he would never love a woman like you."
"Bitch!" Casey slapped her again, her eyes flashing with rage. "Didn't you hear me? I said get out!"
Kourtney shook her head, but Casey had already grabbed her by the hair. Ignoring Kourtney's cries of pain, she dragged her out of the room and locked the office door behind her.
Realizing that the door wouldn't budge, Kourtney fought back her tears and turned to run toward the inpatient department.
"His body has developed resistance to this medication. The standard dosage isn't enough for him, which is why this happened. I'll prescribe an extra box. Administer it at one and a half times the normal dose."
"Thank you, Dr. Ranford. If you hadn't gotten here in time, we wouldn't have known what to do."
I shook my head at the gratitude of the patient's family members. "It's just part of my job. It has been a difficult period for you guys too. Take good care of him."
"Dr. Ranford!"
I heard Kourtney's anxious voice from outside. I quickly apologized to the family and stepped out, only to see her running toward me, one side of her cheeks swollen with a distinct slap mark.
My brows furrowed. "Who hit you?"
Who had the nerve to start a fight in the hospital?
Kourtney didn't even try to cover her face and clutched my sleeve instead. "Ms. Newton came. She kicked me out of your office. I don't know what she's doing in there. You'd better go check. I'm worried she might—"
"Did she hit you?"
I immediately caught the key detail. Immediately after I asked, Kourtney lowered her head.
"I'm fine. It's not bleeding. I'm just worried she'll mess with the things in your office."
"Nora, get her treated. I'm heading back."
I called over Nora, who had just finished replacing a patient's IV bag, and asked
her to help Kourtney. Then, I hurried toward my office at top speed.
The door had been unlocked, and Casey was sitting comfortably inside. When she saw me walk in, her eyes lit up with excitement.
"Jace, you're finally back!"
What do you think?
