Chapter 23 That Hateful Family
After a splendid honeymoon in Hawaii, Darrian and Hannah returned to Seoul, their hearts full of love and memories. As they settled back into their routine, Darrian couldn't shake off the nagging thought about Charmaine and Ethan. He didn't want to worry Hannah unnecessarily, so he decided to investigate discreetly. He listened to Becky as she mentioned the meeting with Charmaine. Ethan would not have told him about it, nor would his Grandfather. Luckily, Becky was a chatterbox, or they would have never discovered the truth.
He reflected that at the airport, they were greeted by Grandfather and the children— Ethan running into Darrian's arms and Becky and Ray hugging Hannah tightly. The children were ecstatic and eager to share their adventures with their parents.
As they all chatted animatedly, Becky suddenly dropped a bombshell. "Mommy, Aunty Charmaine took us to the movies with her mom," she exclaimed, oblivious to the tension this statement caused. Darrian and Hannah exchanged a knowing look, their smiles faltering slightly. The revelation lingered, casting a shadow over their joyous reunion. Darrian's mind raced with questions as Hannah sensed his unease. But for now, they plastered on smiles for the children's sake and embraced the chaos of family life, grateful to be surrounded by their loved ones once again. When Becky said, "Aunty Charmaine," the husband and wife team held their breath. Hannah first sighed loudly and asked, "What did you say?" Becky repeated herself. Trying not to tighten her grip, Hannah said, "Honey, Charmaine is not your real aunty." Becky said, "Oh!" Hannah said, "We will continue this conversation later."noveldrama
Hannah worried there would be some reckoning when the truth came out, and her daughter discovered that Charmaine was her step-sister. Darrian, on the other hand, sighed in relief. In his heart, he knew he would have a private conversation with Grandfather. Darrian hoped that Grandfather understood the severity of the situation when they found out that Charmaine hit Ethan and that Grandpa would prevent any contact between the two. Darrian knew how much Ethan loved and relied on
Charmaine for emotional support, but he trusted his child in his Grandfather's care. Being the adult, Grandfather should have made a better choice for Ethan and stood his ground against Charmaine's wiles. Grandfather always had a soft spot for Charmaine, but Darrian needed to make sure his children's well-being came first.
As they drove home, Darrian brows drew together in anger as Hannah tried calming him down with soothing words. He knew he had to address the issue and could not ignore it before it got out of control-grandfather's understanding of the potential impact of the situation on his family.
As they drove back home in the limo, the tense atmosphere hung like a separation curtain, lingering in the air. Darrian knew they had to address the issue before it escalated further. The thought of Charmaine's actions affecting his kids weighed heavily on his mind, but he also believed in his family's strength to weather any storm that came their way. This situation will cause a rift that may widen if not curbed immediately. Grandfather had to take responsibility for his actions and realise that Charmaine's presence would affect Ethan, the two other children, and Darrian's wife. Despite the burden on Darrian's mind, he believed he must remain steadfast in his belief, strength and resilience. His marriage will weather any storm and overcome this challenge, and he hoped that he would not lose his cool and contain his anger toward Grandfather Martin. Darrian wanted to tell his Grandfather how wrong he was on the ride home, but he waited until the children went into the house with Hannah before he told Grandfather he wanted to talk with him privately. Grandfather procrastinated by telling Darrian that they should have lunch first. Darrian bided his time, and after lunch, they retired to the study to discuss the matter while Hannah entertained the children. With a heavy heart, Darrian confronted Grandfather about the court order that Charmaine should not have any contact with Ethan. Grandfather's explaned that Charmaine called, crying and longing to see her son, Ethan. Darrian was angry as he exclaimed, "Her Son!" This explanation did little to assuage Darrian's concerns. He did not buy into Grandfather's explanation. It seemed as if Charmaine was trying to influence Grandfather once again. Darrian insisted that Grandfather understood the severity of the situation he reminded him Charmaine physically abused Ethan; he had hoped that Grandfather would prevent any between Ethan and Charmaine. He knew how much Ethan loved and relied on Charmaine for emotional support, but Darrian trusted his child in Grandfather's care. Being the adult, Grandfather should have made a better choice for Ethan and stood his ground against Charmaine's wiles. Grandfather always had a soft spot for Charmaine, but Darrian was determined to remove all traces of her presence in Ethan's life, and he must ensure his children's well-being came first. Darrian asked, "Grandpa, didn't we agree that Charmaine should not have any physical contact with Ethan?" Martin said, "Charmaine called crying that she missed Ethan." Martin said he was with them all the time, supervising her visit. Darrian said that does not make him feel better. He emphasised to Grandfather that such a situation must never recur, underlining the trust Darrian had placed in Martin to protect his children. In the meantime, while Hannah entertained the children, she reflected on when Becky said, "Aunty Charmaine." It felt like a gunshot pierced her heart as her husband and she held their breath. Hannah first let out a loud sigh. She would have to explain all about her family dynamics to her child. She did not want to tarnish her daughter's psyche with such awful family relationships, especially about Charmaine stealing Ethan and pretending to be his mother.
Days sped by quickly, and the following Friday, when it was time to pick up Ethan, Darrian called Hannah and told her. "Honey, I am swamped. Can you pick up Ethan from school?" She answered. "Sure, Darling, I will take the twins and him to get ice cream and then to a playground." He replied, "OK, Honey, I will meet you there." When she arrived at the school, the Principal told her that his mom picked him up. She asked, "Do you mean Charmaine?" He said, "Yes!" Hannah said, "I am his biological mother and married to his father. We did not give her permission to pick up our son; please update your records and delete her from your list of guardians." He agreed to do so if Darrian sent them an email. She called Darrian and told him that Charmaine had Ethan. Darrian was upset and called Grandfather to say to him that his decision to give Charmaine access to Ethan had caused her to pick him up. Grandpa said that Ethan was not home yet. This was when the severity of Granfather's actions became evident to him.
The whole family was excited for this particular weekend, the twins said they would have a great weekend as a family now that they were all officially Daddy's children. Darrian picked up the twins with their nanny, and thenhe received the call as he was going to pick up Ethan and Hannah.

Everything went out of control when Charmaine called Martin to inform him that she was at the police station and that Ethan was abducted. Martin called Darrian back and gave him the information. He told Grandfather to go to the police headquarter and asked his friend to give him the CCTV. Grandpa went to pick up the CCTV. Grandfather Martin's friend, now the Commissioner of Police, told him to visit his office. Martin asked Thomas if he had the CCTV footage, and he said yes. Thomas sent CCTV footage off to Darrian, and Darrian, his wife grandpa and his security entourage looked at the footage. The three adults did not mention anything to the twins. They did not want them to know what was happening. As they looked at the footage, Hannah said, "Oh, that's Charmaine's uncle and her mom Naomi." Hannah mentioned Charmaine's uncle, which puzzled Darrian a lot; how did Hannah know Charmaine's uncle? He did not ask her as he was primarily concerned for his child's safety.
