Chapter 18 Angry Mother
When Darrian returned home, he heard his son sobbing in his room. Since there were no more incidences of Ethan being terrified, Darrian suggested he return to his room. Darrian's heart raced as he listened to Ethan's frightened sob; his mind immediately focused on calming his son. Ethan's trembling finger pointed to the bookshelf, his tiny voice quivering as he described the green eyes turning red. Darrian's eyebrows furrowed in concern as he scanned the shelves, finding nothing but books and toys."Ethan, buddy, there's nothing here," Darrian reassured, pulling his son into a protective hug. "It's okay, I promise. I'm here with you."
Ethan clung tightly to his father, his eyes wide with fear as he refused to step back into the room. Darrian smiled reassuringly as he gently patted Ethan's back before carrying him out of the room. As they walked down the hallway, Darrian's thoughts raced, wondering what could have caused Ethan's sudden fright. Darrian did not know that there was a disagreement between Ethan and Charmaine, who demanded that she was his mother and that he had to listen to her and answer her questions. She asked him to describe his weekend with the sleep. The little boy couldn't recollect everything. She slapped him with her phone when he did not tell her what she wanted to know. He cried out, and she told him if he did not stop, she would punish him further. He had a big bruise on his leg. She reminded him that he must have said he had fallen if anyone asked him about the bruise.
When Ethan was at home, he began to cry. He remembered how gentle the twins' mommy was. She was always hugging them and telling them she loved them. He wanted her for his mommy, not someone who hit him whenever she felt like it. She made them feel happy, while his mommy made him sad or primarily mad.
Meanwhile, Charmaine's anger simmered beneath the surface as she went to Darrian's office. She needed to make him see things from her perspective and understand the challenges of parenting a child as spirited as Ethan. Knocking on the door, she entered without waiting for a response, her eyes meeting Darrian's with a mixture of frustration and determination.
"Darrian, we must address this," Charmaine asserted, her voice unwavering. "Ethan's conduct today was unacceptable, and I refuse to tolerate it. We need to tackle this as a team."
Darrian absorbed Charmaine's words in silence, his face a mask of contemplation. Ethan was his flesh and blood, and his connection with him was unbreakable. Yet, as he met Charmaine's gaze, he wanted to tell her Ethan had a perfect mom who adored him. But he couldn't cut her out of his son's life. The air in the room was heavy with unspoken words, both adults bracing themselves for the intricate path of co-parenting a spirited child like Ethan. He told Charmaine he was busy and needed to return to work. He would address the issue when he got home.
That was the night Ethan got up shivering with nightmares. When Ethan settled down, he called Hannah. He told her that something was bothering him, but he would not visit that night because Ethan was having nightmares again. She asked him if he needed her to come over to his house. He told Hannah that Ethan was already asleep and he would have to keep him in his bed. A theory was forming in his mind about his son's trauma.
Darrian believed that whenever Ethan was traumatised, he had nightmares. Darrian wondered what transpired between him and Charmaine. The last time she went over to his office about Ethan was when he fell downstairs. He would have to talk to Ethan in the morning to find out what happened that day. That night, Ethan was whimpering and running a fever. Darian barely slept a wink while worrying about his son. By morning, he was exhausted. He took Ethan to see the doctor. Dr. Ray gave Ethan fever drips and then sent him home. Darian called Hannah while he was at the hospital and told her he would be coming to work after he grabbed a few hours of sleep because he was exhausted. The driver drove them home, and then Darrian gave Ethan pancakes and put him to bed after eating.
At work, Hannah called Aunty Jacky, the Nanny, to let her know the children, and she would visit Ethan to cheer him up. Aunty Jacky said she would love to visit the sick child with them. Hannah drove over with the children to Darrian's house. A smile lit up when Ethan saw his siblings, and he felt comforted by their presence. With his siblings around, he felt confident and safe.

The twins, Jacky and Becky, ran towards Ethan and wrapped him in a tight hug. "We missed you, Ethan!" Ray exclaimed, smiling. They all headed to Ethan's room to play with his toys while Darrian, Hannah and Jackie chatted. Darrian wanted another person's perspective, so he asked Jacky if Ethan had ever said anything to Ray about Charmaine. Jacky told Darrian that Ray or Becky never discussed this with her. She was sure that if there were something, he would mention it to his siblings because they always had Facetime conversations in the afternoon after school. Becky suddenly bounced into the quiet room in the middle of the conversation.noveldrama
As Becky burst into the room, her eyes wide with excitement, she blurted out, "Mummy, there's a cool mark on Ethan's leg!" Darrian's interest was piqued, and he asked Becky to describe the mark. She explained that it was big, square, and red. The atmosphere stilled as Darrian stood still. Then, he mobilised himself and sprinted over to Etna's room.
Darrian's heart raced as he went to Ethan's room, with Hannah and Jacky following closely behind. He asked Ethan to come over and then instructed Becky to show him where the mark was. Being obedient, Becky said here, Daddy, as she lifted the pyjamas, revealing the red mark on Ethan's leg. Darrian's eyes widened in shock as he began to shout. "What the Hell! How did this happen?" He demanded, wanting to know where and when Ethan got that mark. With a shrug, Ethan admitted that he got it when he fell at school. Hannah and Ethan wanted to know why the teacher did not call to let his dad know he was injured. He lied and said his mom knew. By this time, Darrian was hopping mad. Why didn't Charmaine tell him that his son was injured?
Darrian's anger flared, and he continued to shout at Ethan, causing tears to well up in his son's eyes. Hannah swiftly picked up Ethan, cradling him in her arms. She whispered soothing words to him, telling him everything would be okay. Ethan nestled his head against Hannah's neck, finding solace in her comforting embrace. The other children, frightened by their father's outburst, silently, unsure what to do. Frightened by Daddy's anger, Becky and Ray started to cry. They ran to their Mummy, who hugged them tightly. Darrian realised the children were almost five, but they were still his babies in Hannah's eyes.
He calmed down, but the children were sobbing softly. Aunty Jacky took the twins into the other room to comfort them. Darrian and Hannah took Ethan to the study, and they all sat down. Ethan climbed into Hannah's lap, feeling safe with her. She gently asked him what happened, rubbing his back and wiping his tears away. As she kissed him and promised to make his boo-boo better, Ethan finally opened up. He revealed that Charmaine hit him when he was not obedient, and she told him to say he fell.
Hannah realised that Charmaine was using her hatred towards her to abuse Ethan. The revelation shook Hannah to her core. Tears streamed down her cheeks as she contained her rage. She promised she would confront Charmaine and teach her a lesson for hurting her little boy. She told Darrian to call Charmaine right away. Darrian calmed her down and said he would address it and that she would have to reveal her identity to her family.
