Thinking this was her chance to finally get Darya kicked out of Paragon, Sharon cheered up.

Howard's voice said, 'She gets a hundred thousand dollars bonus if Kemp gets the deal at market rate.'

Darya's voice said, 'You are talking about a kickback."

'Come on, it's just the cost of doing business.' Howard chuckled.

Sharon's face paled. 'You bugged the room! That's illegal!'

Darya spread out her hands. 'I don't know what you are talking about. I like to dictate memos using voice commands. I just forgot to switch the app off when I entered the club. It happened to capture the entire

conversation last night.'

Sharon swallowed hard.

Receiving kickbacks was not just grounds for dismissal from the company.

Darya tapped a finger on the desk. 'He's just the vice president, not the big boss. What do you think he'll do if he finds out you are the one who cost him his cushy

job?

'But it's not me! Sharon shouted. 'It's you! Aren't you afraid he's going to come after you, too?

Darya shrugged. 'You've been spreading tumours about me and Avery. If, like you said, I'm Avery's girlfriend, do you think I'd be worried about someone like Howard?'

She smiled. 'If Howard has the guts to come after me, which I highly doubt, I have Avery to protect me. Who do you have to protect you?'

Realising she'd lost, Sharon hung her head.

Her eyes turned red.

'I'm sorry,' she sobbed. 'It was...it was just that one time. I made a mistake.

Please don't turn me over to the

board.'

'Why should I give you a second chance?'

Sensing an opening, Sharon looked up. 'I'll...I'll pledge my allegiance to you! I'll be your eyes and ears at the company!'

Darya pretended to think it over.

Sharon leaned forward, eager to please. 'Come on, just give me another chance, please! You are new at the company. A lot of the staff are...unhappy about your appointment as the VP. They won't dare say it to your face because you are, well, you are Mr McAllister's, um, friend. But they won't work with you. There are a lot of ways they can make things hard for you without appearing insubordinate. But I can help!'

Darya gave the woman an evaluative once-over. 'What can you do?'
